M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers)

Diagnosis

§ 01 — Definition

The M-CHAT-R/F is a validated two-stage screening tool for autism in children aged 16 to 30 months. Parents complete a 20-question yes/no checklist about their child's behavior — questions cover pointing, eye contact, response to name, imitation, and interest in other children. Children who score at medium or high risk receive the Follow-Up interview, a structured set of questions that reduces false positives. The M-CHAT is not a diagnosis — it identifies children who should be referred for comprehensive evaluation. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism screening at 18 and 24 months using the M-CHAT or similar tools. The screening is free and takes about five minutes to complete.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

Early screening leads to earlier diagnosis, which means earlier access to Part C early intervention and waiver applications. The Compass Quiz accounts for your child's screening status.
