The ADOS-2 is the gold standard semi-structured assessment for diagnosing autism spectrum disorder. Administered by a trained clinician, it consists of a series of activities and social presses designed to elicit behaviors relevant to autism — communication, social interaction, play, imaginative use of materials, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. The ADOS has five modules selected based on the individual's age and language level, from toddlers to adults. Scoring produces comparison scores that indicate whether the individual's behaviors are consistent with autism. The ADOS typically takes 40 to 60 minutes and is used alongside parent interviews, developmental history, and cognitive testing for a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.
An ADOS-based diagnosis is often required for waiver eligibility, school classification, and insurance authorization. Having this assessment completed early strengthens every application you file.
