Unlock Services That Insurance Will Not Cover
Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers fund critical supports that private insurance typically does not cover: respite care so you can take a break, habilitation services to teach daily living skills, supported employment, home modifications, assistive technology, and community integration programs. These waivers allow your child to receive services at home and in the community instead of in an institution. Every state runs its own waiver programs, and they vary widely in eligibility criteria, services offered, and — critically — waitlist length. Some states have waitlists of 5, 10, or even 15 years. This is why applying now is essential, even if your child is very young. Getting on the waitlist today means your child will reach the top of the list sooner. Many waivers use a "date of application" priority, so the earlier you apply, the better your position. Some states also offer a "Katie Beckett" or "TEFRA" option, which allows children with significant disabilities to qualify for Medicaid based on the child's disability alone, regardless of family income. This can be a lifeline for middle-income families who earn too much for traditional Medicaid but cannot afford the full cost of therapies and supports out of pocket.
Waiver waitlists in many states exceed 5-10 years. Your position is determined by application date. Every month you delay pushes your child further back in line.
