TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-Handicapped Children)

Therapies

§ 01 — Definition

TEACCH is a structured teaching approach developed at the University of North Carolina that leverages the visual strengths common in autism. The method organizes the physical environment, uses visual schedules and work systems, and structures tasks so the individual can work independently. A TEACCH classroom might have clearly defined areas for different activities, color-coded schedules on the wall, and task boxes that show exactly what to do, how much to do, and what comes next. The approach respects autistic culture and focuses on building skills within a supportive environment rather than trying to make the person 'look neurotypical.' TEACCH principles are used in schools, homes, workplaces, and group homes worldwide.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

TEACCH strategies can be built into IEP accommodations at no cost. When combined with waiver-funded habilitation services, structured teaching extends into the home and community.
