Respite Care

Daily Living

§ 01 — Definition

Respite care provides temporary relief for primary caregivers of individuals with disabilities by arranging substitute care. Respite can be provided in the family's home, in a provider's home, or in a facility-based setting such as a group home or specialized respite center. Services range from a few hours of in-home support to overnight or weekend stays. Respite workers may be trained direct support professionals, certified nursing assistants, or — in self-directed waiver programs — trusted friends or extended family members. Respite is one of the most requested and valued HCBS waiver services because caregiver burnout is a leading cause of out-of-home placement. Research consistently shows that access to regular respite reduces caregiver stress, improves family stability, and helps individuals with disabilities remain in their homes.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

Respite care is available through nearly every HCBS waiver in every state. Families should request their full respite allocation — many families leave hours unused because they do not know they are entitled. The Compass Quiz identifies respite options in your state.
