PRT (Pivotal Response Treatment)

Therapies

§ 01 — Definition

Pivotal Response Treatment targets 'pivotal' areas of development — motivation, self-management, responsiveness to multiple cues, and self-initiation — that, when improved, produce broad improvements across many behaviors. Created by Robert and Lynn Koegel at UC Santa Barbara, PRT uses natural reinforcement tied to the child's choices. For example, if a child reaches for a ball, the therapist prompts a verbal attempt ('ba') and the natural reinforcer is getting the ball. PRT sessions look like play and happen in homes, parks, and classrooms. Because it builds on the child's interests, PRT tends to increase engagement and reduce problem behaviors. It is classified as an NDBI and has strong research support for improving language and social skills.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

PRT is covered under ABA benefits in many states. Some states specifically list PRT as an approved methodology. The Atlas shows which states have the broadest ABA service definitions.
