High-Tech AAC

Communication

§ 01 — Definition

High-tech AAC refers to electronic speech-generating devices (SGDs) and tablet-based communication apps that produce spoken output when the user selects symbols, words, or letters. Popular high-tech AAC solutions include dedicated devices from Tobii Dynavox, PRC-Saltillo, and Forbes AAC, as well as iPad apps like Proloquo2Go, TouchChat HD, LAMP Words for Life, and TD Snap. These systems offer large vocabularies, customizable layouts, word prediction, and access methods ranging from direct touch to eye gaze and switch scanning. High-tech AAC enables users to generate novel sentences, participate in conversations, and communicate across all environments. A speech-language pathologist conducts an AAC evaluation to determine the most appropriate system based on the individual's motor, visual, cognitive, and language abilities.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

Speech-generating devices are covered as durable medical equipment under Medicaid and most HCBS waivers. Families can request an AAC evaluation to get a device funded — Waive Help can guide you through the authorization process.
