BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)

Therapies

§ 01 — Definition

A BCBA is a graduate-level clinician certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board to design and supervise ABA therapy programs. BCBAs conduct assessments, write treatment plans, train caregivers, and oversee Registered Behavior Technicians who deliver direct therapy. To earn the credential, a practitioner needs a master's degree, supervised fieldwork hours, and must pass a national exam. BCBAs work in homes, clinics, schools, and community settings. Families seeking ABA services should confirm their provider employs or contracts with a BCBA, because insurance and Medicaid reimbursement typically require BCBA oversight for covered services.

§ 02 — Why it matters for benefits

When applying for ABA through a waiver or state plan, your BCBA's documentation drives the authorization. Waive Help's Compass Quiz helps you find states with strong BCBA network access.
